Spleen and Portal Venous System Diseases

Why does the spleen enlarge?

The spleen is an important organ that filters blood cells and supports the immune system. However, in certain conditions, the spleen may become enlarged. One of the most common causes of this enlargement is liver-related disease. When the liver does not function properly, pressure on the spleen increases, which can lead to its enlargement.

In people with an enlarged spleen, the following symptoms may be seen:

  • Fatigue
  • A feeling of fullness in the upper left side of the abdomen
  • Frequent bruising or nosebleeds
  • Weakening of the immune system

gibi belirtiler görülebilir.

If the spleen becomes excessively enlarged or starts destroying blood cells more than normal, removal of the spleen (splenectomy) may be necessary.

Why does blood pressure increase in the liver?

If there is a blockage in the blood flow through the vessels in the liver for various reasons, blood begins to accumulate before it reaches the liver. This condition is called increased pressure in the liver vessels, or “portal hypertension” in medical terms.

This condition is particularly common in people with liver disease, especially cirrhosis

Symptoms include:

  • Dilated veins in the stomach or esophagus (varices)
  • Risk of bleeding
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen (swelling/ascites)
  • Enlargement of the spleen

How are these conditions treated?

Medical Treatment: The first step is usually to control the condition with medications. However, in some cases this is not sufficient.

Interventional procedures: Special devices are advanced into the vessels to reduce blood pressure (for example, the TIPS procedure).

Surgical Intervention: If the spleen is markedly enlarged or causes significant loss of blood cells, it may be surgically removed.

In addition, if the risk of bleeding from the esophagus is high and other treatments have failed, certain abdominal vessels can be ligated to redirect blood flow.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is the spleen removed?

It may be removed due to excessive enlargement, recurrent infections, or excessive destruction of blood cells.

Is blockage of the liver vessels dangerous?

If not treated early, it can lead to serious bleeding. Therefore, close monitoring is necessary.

Is spleen surgery difficult?

Thanks to advancing technologies, it can often be performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques, and patients generally recover in a short time.
